Really just a few topics on Alaska's View From The Hill this week, as Sen. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska-R) was pulled from the interview early to vote for the START missile treaty.

  • "GOP leadership fought the spending bill. You campaigned on 'To heck with Alaska, let's do what's right for Alaska.' What was wrong for Alaska in the spending bill?"
  • Was voting against the budget an end run at killing the funding of health care reform?
  • The 9/11 first responders bill. It's been 9 years. Why isn't this a no-brainer, unanimous consent, move-the-bill immediately issue?

Felling: Press accounts suggest that the Republicans lined up to kill the spending bill. What happened there?

Sen. Murkowski: There was a suggestion in the press that somehow or another all of the Republicans had agreed they would not support the omnibus. That is not an accurate statement.... He did not work the phones with this Senator.

Felling: Is there any way that the 9/11 first responders were being used as political pawns?

Sen. Murkowski: You hate to think that our first responders or any of our constituents became a political football, but towards the end this did become a bit of football going back and forth.
