UPDATE: The victim has been identified as Marya Abramczyk, 44-year-old Anchorage resident.

ANCHORAGE - Two people on their way to work Tuesday morning discovered a woman's body in the parking lot of the Anchorage Unitarian Universalist Fellowship church.

Police were called around 8:15 a.m. while the two witnesses tried to help.

"They rushed over and tried to determine if there was something they could do by way of CPR that kind of thing,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant Dave Parker.

But it was too late.

One woman, living across from the church on Turnagain St. and 32nd Ave., said she heard what could’ve been a gunshot at about 2 a.m., but didn't call police.

Police won't confirm if the woman was shot.

Church members were upset when they arrived on scene.

"Panic - of course, because I didn't know exactly know what had happened; I mean we still don't know exactly what's happened but it would appear there's been a homicide,” said church board member TK Kleiner.

Kleiner said she didn’t know the woman.

"It sounds by the description of the person that it is not a member or a person who attends regularly - of course one can never know," she said.

Investigators say foul play was involved and are working to confirm if she was killed in the parking lot or elsewhere.

“They have to consider every possibility so they will work that as a crimes scene and make that determination from the evidence that surrounds us here,” said Parker.

The victim's name will be released when family is notified.
