Louisiana flavors in Downtown Anchorage

ANCHORAGE - When two brothers decided to move their families from Mexico to the United States in search of the American dream, they had no idea how successful they would be.

That great success has come from the Gumbo House at 611 W. Ninth Avenue downtown, and that's what you'll get -- lots of gumbo.

Susie Terwilliger, a frequent customer, says, "It's the best gumbo I've ever had and I've been to New Orleans and I like this better."

For the Delreal brothers, their recipe for success began with a simple meal. Six years later, their Cajun dishes have become local favorites. Some regulars eat at Gumbo House at least twice a week. They say it's like being in Baton Rouge, except with colder weather. The place is small and seats 25 people; from the outside, it looks like someone's house.

Owner Gustovo Delreal said, "They know we have a small place and they wait; we don't have many complaints."

Customers say this place is a diamond in the rough, and the size is part of its charm. Here, customers are served gumbo and jambalaya with a side of southern hospitality, and a Mexican twist.

These brothers may call the North home, but their roots are from down South, and they're bringing an authentic Louisiana feel to the 49th state.
