Losing Our Religion

Tools

By Lee Cowan / CBS News

(CBS News) The words "In God We Trust" can be found on all our currency, a reflection of the importance of religion in American lives. At least the lives of many of us, but not ALL.

It's not just in Newtown, Connecticut, but in churches and synagogues - and any other building of faith - the question "why" is being asked over and over this morning.

In times of both heartache and happiness, we turn to our faith for guidance and comfort. But increasingly, how we think about our faith is changing.

According to a new study by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, the nation's spiritual landscape may be becoming a little LESS religious.

Some 45 million people, or one-fifth of the U.S. adult population, now say they belong to no church in particular.

Six percent of them are either atheist or agnostic.

"There's a yearning to find like-minded people, to be able to have a conversation that's not taboo," said Red McCall, president of an atheist group in the buckle of the Bible Belt - Oklahoma City - whom we met last month.

In just the past three years, membership in the Oklahoma Atheists has jumped from just 300 members to well over a thousand.

Shelly Rees, a college professor, in one of them. She feels the public mood on atheists - even here - has softened.

"There were still people when we were marching in the parade at Halloween yelling, 'You're going to hell,' and stuff like that," said Rees. "But there were more people who weren't, and I think that's going to keep going. I think that's the trend."

Researchers call them "The Nones" - those who check the "none" box when asked to describe their religious affiliation.

And they've more than doubled since 1990.

Is the nation becoming more secular? "Maybe, a little bit," said Cary Funk, the senior researcher on that Pew Study. Funk says it's a complicated question, because being unaffiliated isn't necessarily the same as not having faith.

"Sixty-eight percent of the unaffiliated say they believe in God or a universal spirit. More than a third describe themselves as spiritual people, but not religious people," Funk said. "And a good portion pray, at least daily."

So if it's not God, or the thought of a higher power that's turning people off, what is?

The study suggests it's organized religion - with respondents overwhelmingly saying many organizations are too focused on money, power and politics.

Protestants have suffered the greatest decline. They now account for just 48 percent of religious adults, making it the first time in history that the United States doesn't have a Protestant majority.

Evangelical churches aren't immune, either. The megachurches once bursting at the seams are a little less mega than they used to be.

"We're seeing church attendance being much more inconsistent than I've ever seen it in my entire life," said Ed Young, Senior Pastor of the Fellowship Church based in Dallas. He's hardly conventional - even preaching a sermon with his wife while sitting on a double bed.

....don't forget, if you are not out living immoral lives and observing one of the commands there would not be a need for child support now would there. God has set these commands so we would not need to have these laws in the first place. Husbands love your wives just as Christ loves the Church and lay his life down for her. wives submit to your husbands, He is the head of the house. Pride the bible says something about that too.

Ray you are probably just an poor little boy hurt and abused by so-call Christian parents that didn't care about you, don't keep taking it out on people trying to live by the word of God. GET HELP!!! and yes learn what the word says before making a ridiculous claim about the Bible.

Ray, simmer down and actually read the Bible before making a dumb comment. There is a lot of instruction about the other thing that you are crying about, not just 10 commandments. Sober up quit making out with your boyfriend for a little bit and READ!!!! Numb nut!!! LOL

"For those here who seem to hate religion, just what part of the 10 Commandments due you hate as well. All of them?" There's lots that's wrong with the 10 commandments. What's mostly wrong is all of the things that are left out that are horrible, horrific, and just as bad or worse than anything in the "list". Corporate greed where traders have lied to people and extorted money out of businesses, people, and others. Destroying companies and lives to increase stock, rape, not paying child support, mental and physical abuse, and the list could go on and on. It's a ridiculous list, and anyone who can critically think can see this. Everyone believes that "if we only believed in god" everything would be ok. When has this ever happened? It seems like the religious doctrine is to "blame those that don't believe". What a cop-out.

people wonder why there are so many horrible crimes making local and national news... they blame guns, or the parents, etc. Our country was founded by God fearing, God loving people. We use to work to live, we raised our children with discipline and love, mothers use to stay home and raise our kids, or a family member, and raised them on the words of God. Now we are prohibited by law to spank, both parents have to work, the schools raise our children, kids dont know how to play outside, they sit inside playing video games, and on and on.... take God out of the picture and this is what we end up with. The reason so many people dont go to church is because so many 'christians' have through their behaviors (completely against the true word of God) have deterred people from coming, through false teachings, through abusing kids, etc. I myself am a believer, I dont however go to church, but I believe in God, Jesus, and the Holy Ghost. Less government, more common sense.

Talking about cramming down a belief, we have to tolerate your worldly beliefs and have it crammed down our throats 5 days a week from the time we start kindergarten through high school and on through most colleges. Not only that but push to make laws concerning your belief to be accepted (and I am talking about atheism, Darwinism). And I am so tired of this being called science vs religion. We have the same science but 2 completely different views of starting points, you want to believe you came from a rock, fine, don't tell me It is wrong to believe God has created in His image.

This nation has slowly removed God from its core belief system. Now that we as a nation have turned our backs on God you have the nerve to ask "Where was God"? He is exactly where we left him. Once we repent and humble ourselves, he will heal our nation. Until then, he will leave us to our own whims and desires. Are we having fun yet?

For those here who seem to hate religion, just what part of the 10 Commandments due you hate as well. All of them? Are you not going to practice them in your daily life and teach your children the basic fundementals of just being a good person? Most of the religions are only trying their best to inform others . Beware and be prepared to fight against that cramming religion down your throat because if you have even a partial brain wave, you will notice the upswing of others beliefs in the middle east that not just cram their beliefs down your throat but will remove your head from your shoulders for not believing.

Religions are all too clearly of "man", not any god. This is especially true these days when people misuse religion to support their political agendas. We all have a right to our own beliefs but it is arrogant for any of us to state that our way is the ONLY way.

Everyone can argue back & forth till eternity and never get it through their heads--It's a matter of faith..You either have it or you don't. Those that do have it are instructed to spread the word. I don't , as a " believer " , accept the idea that we are supposed to try to cram it down someone else's throat..Just my opinion..

We are terrified of death. All of us. Me too. That doesn't mean that I make up stories of eternal life to make myself feel better. There are those that would then ask: "well, how can you possibly know what happens after you die?" and "how can we possibly just die, there has to be something else?". I have the answers. I have the truth. The truth is that it's just like before you were born. Before you were born, you did not exist. You had no consciousness. You were nothing. After you die, it's the same. Why wouldn't it be?

I love how Nay answers Ray by offering fear and threats and condescension. "you poor thing", "I pray you come to the truth"? "Eternity is a very long time"? I agree with Ray and am just as tired. I am tired of 'the faithful', who have nothing but their blind devotion to their personal religion insinuating that I am not mature enough to understand the fairytale they have embraced. I am tired of 'true believers' who refuse to give me, and those like me who do not agree with them, the common courtesy of being polite in a discussion. Mostly I am tired of the implied and not so implied threats delivered by those who claim to follow a religion of love and peace, yet think it is acceptable to tell people of all ages that do not agree with them that they are going to 'burn in hell fire for all eternity'. We should all remember that 'In God We Trust' was not on any currency in the country before the 1950's, and fear of communism, not the faith of the majority put it there. MPK

You nailed it Ray! Religion likes to KEEP people 'in the dark' and then claims to lead them out of the darkness ON THE CHURCH'S OWN TERMS. That gives the church control, which is what gets them the power and the money. The true 'light' that guides people is always knowledge, which comes from information. The bible offers some knowledge, but it's hundereds of years old, and mostly outdated. It offers timeless principles (do unto others...) but also ancient superstition and many examples of hatred and intolerance by god himself toward all those who are not his 'chosen' ones. Happily we live in a time of freely shared information based on reliable science instead of myth (ie- people are born gay, they don't choose to be gay). As more people allow their minds to open up to facts, they turn away from the mind control that is organized religion.

Ray, you poor thing, you're going to expire some day, as we all are and I pray that you can come to the truth before then. Eternity is a very long time to think about "should've" "could've" and "would've" God has made Salvation very easy for people who want it. Seek Jesus Christ.

Yes, we are tired of people trying to explain away things with religion that can't be explained with a simple or good answer. Due to the accessibility of information, people see right through it, where they didn't earlier in this century and in times past.
