The city of Kotzebue says it needs a half-million dollar contract with the state by Wednesday to reopen its jail and receive prisoners arrested by the state.

In a letter to Corrections Commissioner Joe Schmidt, Kotzebue City Manager Derek Martin says the state must pay $100,000 per-month through the end of the state fiscal year –  June 30.

The city is also offering to lease its jail to the state thereafter.

There was no immediate comment today from the Department of Corrections.
