Hostess’s Last ShipmentOne last load of baked cakes hit AnchorageANCHORAGE - There’s good news for fans of the Twinkie, Ho Ho and Ding Dong. Hostess may be selling off its assets nationwide, but a final shipment of the coveted cakes has just arrived in Alaska. The Sunrise Bakery in Spenard isn’t baking anymore, but you wouldn’t have known it from the line of cars parked outside the retail store Monday. Inside, a line of customers scooped up boxes of Twinkies and other baked goods, packing them into their carts. The retail store received a last shipment of the Hostess cakes by barge from Seattle, where the company’s largest bakery has now shut down as well. It’s turned the iconic Twinkie into a bit of a collector’s item, offered for thousands of dollars on eBay. Jon Rus said he stopped by the store to pick up a package of hot dog rolls…but when he spied the newly arrived Twinkies, he couldn’t help himself. “I had to get the Twinkies,” said Rus. “We aren’t going to see them anymore, and they will last a long time,” he said with a wink. But one thing that won’t last forever is the Sunrise Bakery itself. Once the shelves are empty, the retail store will close as well. It’s bad news for loyal customers, and sad news for Barb Rahe, who has worked at the bakery for 23 years. Rahe is hoping the sun won’t set on Sunrise for good and that someone may buy the bakery and start it up again. In the meantime she’ll be running the retail store at least through the weekend and possibly next week as well. |
