"Giving Tuesday" New Holiday for Charities

Following Black Friday and Cyber Monday, nonprofits hope Giving Tuesday catches on

ANCHORAGE - The holiday season isn’t just about giving gifts, but giving back to the community as well.

For the first time, there’s a big push for a movement called Giving Tuesday. More than 2,000 charities and organizations from all 50 states have registered with Giving Tuesday.

Five Alaska-based organizations are listed as partners, including Alaska Youth for Environmental Action, which is asking for donations to help the Food Bank of Alaska.

The Alaska Community Foundation is another. President and CEO Candace Winkler said the group works to fund smaller programs around the state.

Winkler said with a lot of emphasis on spending money from Black Friday to Cyber Monday, it’s nice to have a day dedicated to helping others.

“It’s a day to pause, take some time on Tuesday, and think about giving back. Think about how you can contribute to your community through philanthropic or volunteer opportunities,” said Winkler.

Many businesses will be using the hashtag #GivingTuesday on Twitter and using Facebook to promote the cause.
