ANCHORAGE - Anchorage firefighters battled two fires in mobile home parks on Friday. One off Muldoon sent two people to the hospital in critical condition.

Witness Edward Smart said this is the second neighbor's home he's seen go up in flames in about a year. From his porch across the way, he saw the smoke. "At first it was very thick smoke coming from the back room and the door." Smart called 911 until first responders arrived.

Anchorage Fire Department Captain Jeff McDonald said navigating was not easy. "Trailers burn hot because there’s not a lot of space for the heat to dissipate, so it's pretty bothersome onto your crews; they take a pounding."

One they were inside, they found an elderly man unconscious on the couch. They said he was suffering from smoke inhalation.

They brought him outside and performed CPR until an ambulance took him away. Firefighters said the mobile home was about 50 percent engulfed when they arrived.

McDonald said remodeled trailers make it difficult for responders to navigate.

"Just a couple extra rooms can become confusing and hard to access... especially when you're dragging a hose line under heavy heat conditions, dark smoke."

The other fire was at Dimond Trailer Park. No one was injured and responders put it out before it could spread to the neighbors.
