The City of Cordova continues to work overnight to clear roads after a massive snowstorm hit the Prince William Sound area, which left the city inundated with 56 inches of snow since January 1, 2012.

*EDITOR'S NOTE* It had been incorrectly reported that 18 feet of snow had fallen in Cordova during recent weeks prior to the publishing of this article. Eighteen feet of precipitation had fallen between November 1, 2011 and when this article was originally published.

On Friday, Cordova Mayor Jim Kallander declared a local disaster as a result of the snow and asked the state for assistance with equipment to help clear the snow.

The Alaska National Guard is expected to arrive in Cordova on Sunday with 50 Guard members. They will also be helping with equipment requests to help with snow removal.

The Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management staff members are also providing direct support to the community.

Avalanche danger remains high and some buildings have collapsed, according to Alaska State Troopers.

The Bidarki Recreation Center has been designated as a shelter for those who feel unsafe in their homes.
