Does Obama's Gun Control Plan Have a Chance?"The right to bear arms is a right, despite President Obama's disdain for the Second Amendment and the Constitution's limits on his power," Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Mich., said Wednesday. "Congress must stand firm for the entirety of the Constitution - even if, but particularly so, when President Obama seeks to ignore his obligation to 'preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.' Taking away the rights and abilities of law-abiding citizens to defend themselves is yet another display of the Obama Administration's consolidation of power." Added Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa: "This is the latest attempt by the President to legislate through emotion, but doing so does not lead to quality legislation. Reducing violence across our nation is a worthy goal, but it is imperative that the Constitutional rights of our citizens are not forgotten in the process." Over the past month, Boehner has brought to the floor two bills that did not have the support of most Republicans - the "fiscal cliff" bill and the Sandy aid bill - and he presumably has little appetite for another bitter fight that would again put him on the opposite side of the majority of his caucus. As they boarded buses for a retreat on Wednesday, CBS News asked Republican House members about the prospects for passage of the president's proposal. Their response is not likely to encourage gun control advocates. Rep. Dennis Ross, R-Fla., said of an assault weapons ban and a 10-round limit on magazines, "I think they would be discussed but I don't if they'd be passed." Rep. Tom Marino, R-Pa., told CBS News that "the president's just making a political move and it's a shame that he's using this situation for political reasons." Rep. Dave Reichert, R-Wash., said he believes "there has to be something done," but he said the first priorities should be mental health issues and enforcing current laws. Reichert, a former Seattle police department sheriff, added, "the assault weapons ban, the magazine limitations does not solve the problem of gun crime." A poll out Wednesday showed that six in 10 Americans support tougher gun laws. But conservative lawmakers in the House are far less concerned with national polls than they are with the views in their district, where straying from the National Rifle Association's steadfast opposition to new gun control laws could anger pro-gun voters and invite a serious primary challenge. The NRA "scores" votes and assigns lawmakers grades on their performance on gun issues, grades that many lawmakers believe have a not-insignificant impact on their reelection chances. That perception goes a long way toward explaining why Congress has not passed any sort of gun control legislation since 1994. The NRA, which briefly went silent after the Newtown shooting, is now aggressively fighting the president's efforts, as illustrated by a controversial ad Wednesday calling Mr. Obama an "elitist hypocrite" because he is "skeptical about putting armed security in our schools when his kids are protected by armed guards at their schools." The group is also reportedly using the full force of its lobbying muscle to fight the president's proposals, in part by arguing that the plan will mean lost jobs. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, 252 members of Congress - 225 Republicans, 27 Democrats - received donations from the NRA in 2012, and the group has donated $20.9 million to federal candidates since 1990. |

@Adamant Mother, the debate isn't about whether or not anyone "needs" assault weapons, it's about your right as an American. After people put their emotions aside they will make educated decisions. There are things I don't think belong in civilized society either, nuclear weapons, pit bulls, Satanism, but just because I don't agree doesn't mean it should be banned, it's our right as Americans to own/do these things and when talking about weapons, it's covered by the Constitution! Shootings are tragic but cars and alcohol kill more people and they aren’t covered by the Constitution so by your logic should we ban them? I don’t know what an assault weapon is. I have a shotgun at home with a pistol grip for security but with the law trying to be passed it would be deemed an assault weapon and illegal for future purchase. It holds 4 rounds, are lawmakers and supporters really looking at this or just shooting from the hip (pun intended). Remove the emotion, prosecute the criminals and provid

It only holds 4 rounds, are the lawmak

President Barack Obama could not pass a background check if he was applying for a gun permit or a job. Why has this man been allowed to remain in office or take the oath for a second time? During the 2008 campaign, it was known that: •His official, long form birth records were SEALED. •His Occidental College records were SEALED. •His Columbia College records were SEALED. •His Harvard College records were SEALED. •His College thesis – SEALED. •His Harvard Law Review articles – SEALED. •His Indonesian adoption records – SEALED. •His passport file – SEALED. •His medical records – Unavailable •His baptism records – Unavailable •His papers from his service in the Illinois legislature – Unavailable •His Illinois State Bar Association records – Unavailable The birth certificate that the White House released is reputed by document experts to be false. The Social Security number he has used was issued to someone else. He could not pass an E-Verify test.

It worked for Hitler, nothing bad happened in Germany when he did it..... What would an overbearing illigitimate regime do with an unarmed country?? Ask the Jews.... It was great for them I hear. People should read about the Rise & Fall of the Third Reich before the march with obama. They're identical in every way. Do the research.

I'm going to guess that "Adamant Mother" (Except spelled right) has no clue what a shot gun full of buckshot can do. Or that it knows how many rounds an automatic or semi automatic shotgun can hold, or how fast one can be reloaded. But from the uneducated rant it is easy to know where "Adament Mother" (spelled wrong from public education and brain washing} got it's ideas. But that is the problem with letting liberals into Alaska for so long. They are ruining the state. Time to stand up and be silent no more.

Mother you should think before you post and stop watching MSN. But good luck with your feeble minded tirade. It is directed in the wrong direction. Educate yourself, then come back and try to post as a thoughtful adult. DO I think 30 round clips are nuts, sure, do I think I could pack 20 10 round clips, or 40 5 rounds clips and swap them fast, sure. Do I think you have no clue, sure. Are the democrats a responsible party or the media. Nope. But you just keep thinking as you do. Keeps everyone else safer.

Mother define assault weapon. A baseball bat can be an assault weapon so can a knife, a car, or the media. According to the Democrats, showing an ID card to vote disenfranchises minorities and elderly and natives. Also the Obama administration is responsible for thousands of deaths in Mexico for his gun running scheme, he is a criminal? Or are you being selective in your rant? Also you know the gun show follow state laws right? or you are you regurgitating what you have been spoon fed. Ex in Cal, 10 day waiting and check, so people at Cal gun shows have to wait 10 days and be checked. Another issue with all this flap. The mil has problems with people going to see mental health "specialists" because of the stigma attached. The mil has been trying to do away with the stigma to try and get more people to get help. So how does the lib agenda help this? It doesn't, In my opinion, mil folks will avoid help so that they will not end up on a list. Your false anger is wasted on the wrong group.

Assault weapons were developed FOR MILITARY TO HUNT HUMANS! There is NO place for them. in civil society. No one needs an assault weapon to protect their property ..shot gun anyone? You'll get the bad Guy! Banning assault weapons DOES NOT violate 2nd Ammend ment Rights! Shot guns are effective enough for defense. If u want to use assault weapons....please go joinour military! Background checks!! YES!! I am appalled that ANY gun is sold without the background check! Criminal negligence for allowing no accountability. So far there are ZERO evidence that legalizing assault weapons has been POSITIVE! Only TRAGEDY has resulted. I have a serious doubt of the trustworthy-ness of anyone who buys at a gun show WITHOUT a background check. Legal or not, this practice points to people with suspect motives. Shame on the vendors for allowing the sale of assault weapons at gun shows! NO ONE NEEDS ASSAULT WEAPONS...except the next criminal! 'Like' is not 'need' an assault weapon.

Not only that (DEA failure), what about the f*ed up govt operations that sent so many guns to Mexico and other places? They aren't exactly the role model for gun control!

Let's throw billions of dollars at gun control and see if it gets any further than the billions thrown at drug enforcement! All this accomplishes is causing everyone to load up on guns and ammo before the laws (possibly) change. If and when the laws do change, everyone will be armed to the teeth already! Anchorage is full of felons who have Ak's, AR's and handguns in their possession. What exactly is going to change THAT? Criminals ignore the law, and the rest of us are starting to come around to that way of thinking too!

We need leadership, a path forward, and a loosening of our freedoms. This guy is more concerned with giving us drugs and GMO's so that his lawyer buddies can sue on our behalf... Pretty much sums this guy up...
