Chevak Students Embrace Technology
The Chevak Environmental Stewards are pushing for excellence and making connections around the world by using technology to teach others about life in rural Alaska.

This week, a group of students from the village of Chevak showcased their skills in downtown Anchorage.
Using technology as a teaching tool, the students are now sharing their knowledge with others across the country and world.
The collection of young adults is part of the Chevak Environmental Stewards. The group is trying to leave an impact on the village by turning ideas into reality.
Issues that affect rural life include preserving cultural heritage, promoting community development, and picking up and recycling trash.
The students are using various career and technical models to learn about future careers to further their passions, and are making connections across the globe.
When kids are able to interact with students from other districts using video chats, Kashunamiut Schools Superintendent Steve Pine of Chevak calls it “a beautiful thing to watch.”
The results just go to show that big things can happen in rural Alaska. “It’s giving me self-confidence. It’s making [me] more confident that I can speak in front of a crowd,” said Ben Agimuk, a Chevak senior.
Amber Jones, another Chevak senior, said, “It really helped me because I didn’t communicate to other people, like, put myself out there.”
Agimuk and Jones have Facebook pages promoting their projects in Alaska and around the world, which shows a momentum in the future of education as it spreads everywhere.
