This week's "Alaska's View from the Hill," Sen. Mark Begich (D-Alaska) weighs in on:

  • The political climate, particularly with regard to Sarah Palin's tweets and comments;
  • The Tucson shooting being linked to Arizona's mental health shortcomings;
  • How environmentalists "prey" on uninformed legislators when it comes to ANWR; and
  • Is the Pentagon pushing 1,400 Marines into Afghanistan to help with their July drawdown math?

Highlights -

Matt Felling: Politicians have off-the-cuff moments, but if you're writing or tweeting or speaking a prepared statement, are you saying it's crucial to be mindful?

Sen. Begich: We must be mindful of what we say and how we say it...Don't demonize people, don't read into what people might be saying. Focus on the issues.

Matt Felling: You had harsh words for Representative Markey last week -- what's the biggest obstacle as you see it to opening ANWR: lawmakers without a deep knowledge, or the environmental lobby?

Sen. Begich: I think it's a combination, actually...National environmental groups, they prey on the lack of information that elected officials have about ANWR.
