ANCHORAGE - A controversial plan that would allow the airport to swap some park land for city property near Point Woronzof is coming up for public comment tomorrow night.

That’s when the Anchorage Assembly will take up a revised version of the West Anchorage district plan.

Some have concerns about a proposal that would let the airport take property near the Tony Knowles Coastal trail at Point Woronzof that it could use for future expansion in exchange some airport owned land, like the Connor's Bog dog park, would go to the city.

KTVA spoke with airport officials who say it's way too early to talk about which properties might be involved.

“We don't even know what parcels might be considered by each side, great deal of controversy being generated over something that’s really in its infancy as far as the process goes,” said John Parrott of the Ted Stevens International Airport.

But Cathy Gleason, who is president of the Turnagain Community Council, says she does not support the plan, or the proposal.

She was particularly concerned about how more development would impact the coastal trail.

“Something like trading away this valuable dedicated parkland and destroying a section of the coastal trail as it exists now is something we should all be worried about a planning document advocating for, we don't think we should have to fight for a permanently dedicated parkland,” Gleason said.

The public hearing is expected to begin tomorrow after 8 p.m. in the assembly chambers at the Loussac Library.

People complain when their kids need to leave Alaska to find jobs -- yet we still make efforts to stop projects that create jobs and future employment. Go figure -- export all these tree huggers now.
