Anchorage Teachers, Students Remember 9/11

A new curriculum aimed specifically at sixth graders features a two-week lesson plan.

The Anchorage School District is trying a new approach to educating students about the events of Sept. 11.

The curriculum aimed specifically at sixth graders features a two-week lesson plan: a historical perspective combined with a request that students talk to their parents to get their views on the day that changed so many lives.

Mary Lee Tung is a sixth grade teacher at Sand Lake Elementary School. She said her students have interviewed their parents and asked for input as well.
 
“I think it’s crucial,” Tung said. “I want them to first hear about it from their parents. I want them to understand their own values and their experience and their family history so that when they come to the classroom, they are ready to have a rich dialogue.”
 
Tung’s lesson plan starts with a historical perspective of the events leading up to Sept. 11, including conflicts in the Middle East and U.S. involvement.
 
She also encourages students to share questions and concerns about the emotional day, and to remember that ordinary people saved lives.
 
Challenging the class to do something positive for others on Sunday, the anniversary of Sept. 11, Tung said her students are up to the task.
