As the push to eat locally-grown food gains in popularity, Anchorage is quick to jump on the bandwagon.

This week, a group of Anchorage residents are pledging to eat only Alaska-grown products for an entire year.

Starting today, approximately 40 members of the Anchorage Permaculture Guild will meet the challenge by either growing their own food, buying it from local gardens, farms or farmers markets, or eating their meals at restaurants that use local ingredients.

The challenge aims to raise awareness of just how much Alaskans depend on outside food and to give Alaskan businesses a boost.

Participants say they want to show they are not giving up any of their comforts by eating locally and that they expect the process to be healthy and fun.

To get things off to a good start, the group celebrated the beginning of its yearlong food journey with a potluck of entrees made entirely from Alaska-grown items.
