ALASKA – Eleven years ago, the world was changed when terrorists attacked the United States. Tuesday, Americans are remembering and reflecting.

Pat Manning remembers well where he was 11 years ago; he was at Ted Stevens International Airport.

“I was getting ready to fly out that day,” said Manning. “So they shut down all the flights, and I didn't have a chance to go out, and since then it's just got progressively more advanced as you go through the airport, and I'm actually glad to see the changes.”

Long airport security lines are the most visible changes in a post 9/11 world, but most travelers are okay with them and said they make them feel safe.

At Anchorage Fire Station 12, Captain Mike Nelchert said his heart goes out to comrades who fought the blaze in New York City.

“When that happened and so many fell at one time, it was an eye-opener, but it still is what we do and when the bells go off we dive in and start doing what we do.”

Today, one Anchorage woman showed her appreciation for their service. Leslie Gunson and her young son delivered a meal and their gratitude to the Anchorage firefighters.

“I want my son to learn compassion and help others,” said Gunson. “I just feel like it’s never too early to teach that.”
