ANCHORAGE - Friday was Charles Baird's last day in civilization for one year. The man who calls himself "the Alaska Pioneer" spent Friday night in Whittier, before heading out to his acre and a half plot on LaTouche Island in Prince William Sound. Saturday he begins his adventure on the uninhabited island, where he will live for a year with a goat named Thor, a dog named Wilson and an assortment of cameras, laptops and guns. "I’ve done all the tasks, the individual parts of the job, before. I've built a cabin. I've gone fishing and done survival school. The biggest challenge will be just being by myself.” Baird delayed his departure for a month while talking to the Discovery Channel about producing a show about his one year in isolation. There’s no deal yet, but his friends and fans can get updates on his Facebook page. "I’m going to independently produce it and post vlogs along the way. It looks like I can get access to the network even on that remote island. And then people can check it for short one-minute, two-minute reports on what's going on." Baird says he has a couple of ways to make an emergency call for help if he gets in trouble. But no one will be able to call him. "I kind of expect to see people drop in -- hunters and fishermen -- and just people, you know, friends who are in the neighborhood drop in for some coffee." Baird, a Christian, says he feels good about his relationship with God and has few fears about the coming year. “I don't think it'll be transformative or anything like that, really, but you know, it might be nice to kind of calm down and get away from the busyness of normal life." No man is an island, but for quite a while, Charles Baird will be on one by himself. |

his folks are or were missionaries - so may be it's God's Will...and his father is or was a pilot...so if all gets too much - he can call in a plane...ego is edging God out I thought...

I know many people that "isolate themselves from people" but spend all day on Facebook. No one can call him?...Hello, facebook. And if you have Facebook, you have Skype...I am with "Just Saying". Give him a knife and no electronics, then you are in the wild.

def. pioneer. a person who is the first to explore or settle a new country or area. a person who is first to research and develop a new area of knowledge or activity. what is baird's "first" to make him a "pioneer"?

if he hunts, traps, fishes out of season or causes harm to his island arrest him. "carry in, carry out" leave it as he finds it or don't go. "one year" is not something to write about. if he dies, "just another stupid white man". don't believe me, ask my neighbors.

Sounds like there has never been a show like this every, oh wait, PBS has one with a real man building a house and living in the wild years ago. This twit, well if for some reason that we may not know of doesn't make it, dibs on his liver. Hope his ego doesn't get in the way. I wouldn't give him 50 cents for this story. unless pirates show up, then may be interesting.

Wait remote yes get that...however he has weapons, computer, call for help cameras...this is a JOKE! He is going to be by himself but is planning on people stopping by...wait what? He wants to survive....give him a knife and a ax and wish him luck for a year....ok we will give him a notebook so he can document everything.
