Alaskan Aid To Japan Continues To FlowIt has been ten days since the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
It has been ten days since the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan and here in Alaska, residents are doing their share to make sure our neighbors are not forgotten in their time of need. “We want to put these blankets, these plastic sheeting, the water cans, the baby formula…we want to put this in the hands of people in that area that need it,” said Ken Isaacs, the Vice President of Projects for Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief organization. Supplies and money have inundated the people of Japan to aid in their road to recovery from the massive earthquake and tsunami that took thousands of lives less than two weeks ago. “Over 15,000 blankets, hygiene supplies, and thousands of feet of plastic requested by the Japanese officials to provide shelter for the thousands of people who have lost their homes,” said Dr. Jerry Prevo, pastor of Anchorage Baptist Temple, who assisted in relief efforts. Seemingly half a world away using skis and snowboards, Hilltop is doing its part to raise funds for relief efforts in Japan. Hilltop will host a fundraiser Wednesday, March 23, from 3 to 8 p.m. The public is invited to come out and ski, snowboard or just hang out. Fifty percent of all ticket sales on Wednesday, along with food sales, will go to the Japanese Red Cross. “They are not strangers to us. They are people just like us that are suffering a huge tragedy and this is something we can do to help,” said Rick Cramer, general manager of Hilltop Ski Area. Hideo Fujita, consul for the Japan Consulate of Alaska, said he appreciates Alaska’s assistance as the state has experience with “big earthquakes.” Samaritan's Purse, with the assistance of numerous churches in Alaska, delivered 93 tons of supplies to Sendai, Japan. The Japan Relief Fund of Alaska has been established to receive donations as well. |
