FAIRBANKS - A small plane crashed into a power line at Dennis and Holmes roads in North Pole Saturday morning, flipping the plane and knocking out power and phone service in that area for several hours.

Ruby Shorey, 45, told emergency crews that she had taken off from the Lakloey area and was making her second pass when the plane lost power. Shorey said she was attempting to land the plane on the road when it clipped some power lines, according to North Star Volunteer Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief Steve Crouch. The plane crashed to the ground and landed on its tail.

Fire crews arrived three minutes after receiving the call at 9:29 a.m. and found the one-seater plane “substantially damaged.” Shorey was uninjured and was able to exit the plane herself.

The plane was a modified custom experimental plane with a wheel on its tail, according to Alaska State Trooper spokeswoman Beth Ipsen. Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration were on scene soon after the crash, Ipsen said.

Golden Valley Electric Association responded and power was restored approximately three hours after the crash, according to Crouch.
