The 'Road to Resources' Meets Opposition

A group has sprung up in protest of the state's consideration of a road to the Ambler Mining District in western Alaska.

ALASKA - A group has sprung up in protest of the state's consideration of a road to the Ambler Mining District in Western Alaska.

The new "Brooks Range Council" appears to be just a website, with a message in opposition to cutting through more than 200 miles of mostly wilderness to reach mining deposits.

The chairman of the group, John Gaedeke, said he fears a road west from the Dalton Highway would have large environmental consequences.

“Most of the people that are involved and myself included are born and raised up here or spent so much time up here it's difficult to imagine living somewhere else,” said Gaedeke. “So we're all in it for the long haul and hoping that we can turn things around."

Ed Fogels of the Department of Natural Resources said, "The project is still in very early stages of evaluation. We haven't even started the environmental impact statement process. No one's applied for any permits to do anything. So state agencies have just been going out and looking at the area."

There are no estimated price tags for the project yet because a route has not been chosen.

why would the alaska state gov. legalize asbestos contaminated rock for use on alaska roads? hes probably not even from alaska.
