TALKEETNA - Ziplines are the latest adventure craze in many parts of the country, and here in Alaska there are several zipline companies. One of the newest ones opened this summer in Talkeetna.
Denali Zipline Tours began offering its Canopy Adventure Tour in July with the idea of providing a unique view of the scenery from 50 feet above the ground. Instead of rocketing down a single steel cable at breakneck speed, the Canopy Tour takes riders across a more gentle series of ziplines that link platforms built high in the forest.
The three hour tour begins with some training and safety checks, including one of the most important ones: how to brake. Riders use their own gloved hands to slow themselves down from speeds as fast as 25 miles per hour. Guides stress safety at every turn and riders are clipped into harnesses at all times.
The grand finale of the tour is the very last zipline that takes clients on a 700 foot glide across a small lake as they approach ground level. On a beautiful fall day riders were reflected in the water below.
Denali Zipline Tours will be open through September and possibly beyond. The company does have age and weight restrictions for its riders.
