Personal interviews with Alaska Natives in the Yukon River basin are helping to provide new insights on climate change and its impacts.

The U.S. Geological Survey recently conducted the interviews with Yup'ik hunters and elders in the villages of St. Mary's and Pitkas Point to document their observations of climate change.

The hunters and elders expressed their concerns that ranged from unpredictable weather patterns and dangerous ice conditions, to changes in plants and animals, as well as the decreased availability of firewood.

The villagers’ observations will help the USGS develop adaptation strategies for rural communities and allow for a more comprehensive understanding of the challenges posed by climate change.

Agreed! They are the experts. Would have loved to see the station do a little more ground work and interview some elders for this segment. Anonymous-The elders know more about land and weather patterns that you could ever imaginge. So much wisdom has been passed down through the culture. I think you should go visit with some before you knock them. You could learn a lot ;)

Really? firewood is down because al gore invented man made global warming and then climate change. Shame on whom ever brain washed the natives.
