Yogurt Wars! New Crop of Shops Vie for Anchorage's Taste Buds

A national trend of frozen yogurt shops has finally made its way to Alaska.

Two new frozen yogurt shops recently opened up in Anchorage. The franchise Yogurtland opened up six months ago at the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, and just six weeks ago locally owned Yogurt Lounge opened its doors in South Anchorage.

The concept is similar to a salad bar where customers have the freedom to choose what they want.

“I think the freedom to be able to make what you want is really big, “ said Mandy Gebauer, co-owner of Yogurt Lounge.

She says the amount of business the shop has received since it opened was triple what they had originally expected.

Another locally owned shop, So Yo Yogurt Shoppe, plans to open its doors to the public next week.

Owners Kandy Broderick and Heather Kinzie say they chose to open up a frozen yogurt shop in South Anchorage was because they felt there was a need for more family-oriented businesses.

“Alaska is number one in consumers of ice cream nationally, so how could it not be well received?” said Broderick.

The frozen yogurt franchise Menchie’s also plans to open up in southeast Anchorage this fall.

What about mid town or east side. Not everyone can get to the south side of town.
