Tonight, a California-based animal rescue center is taking possession of the first group of wolves and wolf-hybrids from Wolf Country USA, after state troopers searched the Palmer property earlier this year.

Thursday night the big operation began to move the 29 wolves and wolf-hybrids from the tourist business in Palmer.

The family who runs Wolf Country USA has agreed to hand over the animals after it was found they did not have a permit to keep them. Lockwood Animal Rescue Center will transport the animals by air and truck to a sanctuary 90 minutes north of Los Angeles.

According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, the owner of the Palmer business Wolf Country USA has never possessed a permit to keep wolves or wolf-hybrids. And now, they must be surrendered.

“We’re heartbroken,” said Werner Schuster, of Wolf Country USA. “Our wolves won’t be there after tomorrow. They’ve been in our life for 25, 30 years. That’s about it.”

Lockwood Animal Rescue Center says the wolf-hybrids would have been killed, but now they will be giving back to the community by helping combat veterans in California transition back to society. Thursday night, the first group of wolf-dogs were taken from the Palmer property.

Werner Shuster says he and his family have owned wolves and wolf-dogs in Alaska for more than 25 years and is sad to see it come to an end. But at the same time, he’s happy the animals will be taken care of.

Funny but they originally there was no permit required 25 years ago. Then the State got on thier high horse and required neutering/permits and no sales. Poor family, and many other owners of wolves and part wolves who've had to give up their animals or move due to the stupid state. Gone is another local small busines attraction in the Valley. Wolves are not for everyone, but these folks had no problems until about five years ago when the State ripped into another Right (Life,Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness). Condolences to Wolf Country.

What I would like to know is why didn't fish and game just give them a permit to have them. They looked like they were well fed. I think fish and game should have just left them alone.

More questions than answers here. If these people had been doing it this long, and no problems, healthy wolves, etc, then why not grandfather them in somehow, or issue permits? How well will wolves raised in this climate do in southern Cali? Was there nowhere else in all of Alaska (or Yukon/BC) to bring them? Not sure exactly what these animals were deemed to need rescue FROM.

Get away with what? They were part of someone's family. How did you get away with being a daughter for so long? You apparently don't know what it means to be truly Alaskan. Next we'll be asking their permission to have what?

Have any of you actually been to that place. Those wolves were sad and unkept. They lived chained-up to concret slabs. And selling wolf hybrid puppies to families that have no idea how to care for such an animal? Really !? There is NO valid reason why someone would run an establishment like this and think they were doing the community a good service.

Little do you know, these wolf/dogs are now in a neighborhood of 5-2 acre parcels in CA. They howl at night, the neighborhood dogs are scared to death, and the horses run the fences due to the howling. Thank's Alaska!!! CA need's better regulations!!!!!
