ANCHORAGE – City crews worked around the clock over the winter to remove tons of snow from the streets. Now that breakup is here, their job still isn’t done.
A record-breaking snowfall meant more sand and gravel had to be dumped on the slick streets. The municipality has employees working around the clock to remove it all. Two crews work during the day, another through the night.
It will take workers two-and-a-half weeks to sweep all the main roads before they can start on residential areas. The general foreman said with 1,400 miles of road around the Anchorage Bowl there’s still a lot of sweeping to do, but it beats snow removal any day.
"Just like spring breakup and everything else, it's been relatively mild, a lot easier break up than we were expecting and I don't see any delays or negative impacts for us," said Paul Vanleadingham.
The municipality will use some of the sand and gravel for different projects, but most of it will end up in the landfill.
