FAIRBANKS - Lucky winners who will have the opportunity to drive the Denali Park Road this fall have been announced.
The 1,600 winners were drawn from 11,024 entrants. The lottery winners have the opportunity to see as much of the Denali National Park and Preserve as they can from the 91-mile road.
Entrants can find whether their names are among a list of winners at the National Park Service’s website at http://www.nps.gov/dena/planyourvisit/road-lottery.htm.
NPS Information Assistant Alex Lindeman said the number of entrants increased this year, but couldn’t explain why. The last two years, he said the number of entrants was around 10,000. He said the vast majority of people applied online, which has been the trend ever since first allowed. This year, applications could be filled at recreation.gov, instead of pay.gov, for cost savings and quicker notifications for winners. People could also enter their names by mail or phone.
The road will be open to permitted travelers from Sept. 16-19 for day-long trips as far as weather permits them to go. Depending on snow, the trip could be as short as to the Savage River (Mile 15) or as far as to Wonder Lake (Mile 85).
