Who’s Watching You? Security Camera Use Increasing in AnchorageAccording to security consultants, surveillance cameras and webcams are becoming more powerful and accurate than ever before.
On the evening of Aug. 17, two men stole nearly $1,000 worth of merchandise from a shop at the Hotel Captain Cook in downtown Anchorage.
They escaped, but because of a security camera inside the hotel police were able to see exactly what they look like. "Generally speaking, there's video of most crimes that are committed,” said Sgt. Mike Couturier of the Anchorage Police Department. "Once we have the video we can take stills of it and then put those out to the public to determine who's who, and who's doing what." The hotel is just one of thousands of businesses and homes around Anchorage armed with video surveillance systems. According to security consultants, those cameras are becoming more powerful and accurate than ever before. "They can read your credit card, if they want to,” said Ron Wilde of Action Security. “They can tell if you did your nails—they can do that." They’re capable of storing information longer, too. Wilde said many systems are capable of archiving a 24-hour stream of video surveillance for up to two months. But the increase in surveillance systems isn’t just limited to security cameras. You can now use webcams to monitor the weather at trailheads or even sneak a peek at how long the line is at the DMV. All that technology boils down to one simple fact. "There's a good chance you'll be on video somewhere if you go someplace in the city of Anchorage,” Wilde said. So, smile! You’re probably on candid camera. |

I really dont blame them. Anchorage has become a cesspool. Nothing but gangs, thugs and drugs, and alcoholics. I grew up there.....lived there for more than 35 years. I gave up on it, when my son was almost killed in a drive by directed at gang members. He was 10, playing on his skateboard. I left as soon as I could pull the finances together. I wish all the good citizens could band together and get the bad element out of what once was an amazing place to live and raise kids.

Gee where did you and your family move? Because what you've described (gangs, thugs and drugs, and alcoholics) can be found in Any City, USA... Be interested to know what city does not have that type of activity.

Same with the Valley...most homes have some kind of security. ADT or Guardian...what some might not know is you can purchase cameras and surviellance kit for about 300 bucks...take that old DVD player buy blank CD and set it up. The economy sucks so folks are gonna steal... Get it on camera and going to court becomes a 7-11 process for the judge to see evidences... Know the law and use it to protect yourselves..

interesting how they have footage on this but when you are in the Correction Facilities of Anchorage the footage is "not saved, recorded over" it is only used or not used to benefit the system

Growing up a few years back, we didn't have all the gangs, aliens fat Samoans, scum from LAs Angeles, selling their drugs.Pass a law. If you want to relocate to Anchorage you MUST have a JOB, Apt or Home, and a sizable savings account, so you can't collect Welfare.New Zeland and Australia have these laws. They don't get all the riff raff like we do.Most of the scum drag in for the permanent fund dividend.Make it a law you have to live and WORK for two years before you can even apply for it.

I've lived here for 6 years now. I thought this was going to be a great place to retire unlike Southern California. As it turns out, according to a recent FBI report, Anchorage is in fifth place for having the most crime per capita and is the 3d most corrupt state in the country. At first I couldn't believe it but after opening my eyes, paying more attention to the new, the proof was right in front of me. Most of Anchorage starting from the center of the city and branching out a few miles looks like a slum, like South Central Los Angeles. Not every part but a good portion is. It's obvious that there were no zoning laws years ago. I've made up my mind to leave. I found a really nice place on Maui and I'm moving there in two weeks. It's shame because Alaska is beautiful but the crime, corruption, is just getting too bad here.

I agree that much of this riffraff has come for the PFD and opportunities provided by a second-rate crime investigation dept. If we can`t abolish the PFD, atleast make it 3 years before a newcomer can get one. Also, if a criminal has been here less than two years as a resident, send them packing if they get caught. I`m fed up with the scumbags here in Anchorage.

"They can read your credit card, if they want to,” said Ron Wilde of Action Security. “They can tell if you did your nails—they can do that." Um, ok. I've reviewed security tapes from quite a few different places recently, and most of them are low resolution and grainy. Live camera is decent, but recorded footage is poor quality. Not saying the super ones don't exist, but they aren't common and they aren't cheap!
