ANCHORAGE—In September, the Loussac Library will celebrate its 25th anniversary. To kick off celebrations, library officials want you to weigh in on what should be next for the building. 

“A lot of things have changed and so the library needs to make some adjustments to be able to serve the public,” said Toni McPherson, community relations coordinator for the Loussac Library.  

There will be a thorough evaluation of the building in order to create and use the existing space to serve the public.

In a survey last year, thousands of Alaskans weighed in on what they want their library to have. Among the suggestions: more options for users.

“I can research, use the Internet and use all different resources that I’m not capable of using anywhere else,” said Julien Jacobs, a Bethel resident.

The library is also working to keep young Alaskans interested in libraries with the help of new designated areas, including a teen room, called Teen Underground. The room opened back in June, and is a place where teens can go to play video games, read books or use media equipment. 

“I like it because it’s a place where you don’t have to search through every single book just to find one,” said Steven Hobbs, an Anchorage teen. “I wish there were more of these.”

It’s just one of the library’s many efforts to keep libraries current.
