Whaling Commission Head Indicted For TheftAccording to the U.S Attorney’s Office, 61-year-old Maggie Ahmaogak used the money to pay for multiple out-of-state gambling trips, new snow machines and a Hummer.The former head of the Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission has been indicted on charges she stole $475,000 from the non-profit. According to the U.S Attorney’s Office, 61-year-old Maggie Ahmaogak used the money to pay for multiple out-of-state gambling trips, new snow machines and a Hummer.
She’s also accused of writing checks to herself from AEWC accounts, and taking payroll advances without repaying them.
Ahmaogak had been the executive director of the commission for 17 years, until she was fired in 2007. Her husband, former North Slope Borough Mayor George Ahmaogak, is running for office again.
Ahmaogak said his wife will plead not guilty, and has been cooperating with investigators.
