Organizers said a power shutdown would impact their effort to help the hundreds of homeless veterans who walk through their doors with job and education opportunities, and two meals a day.

The organization that helps Alaska's homeless vets is getting back on its feet and is looking for some help of its own to keep operations going.

Vets Helping Vets –which recently took on a brand new look after they say they were victims of embezzlement under former director Jerry Butler— is still experiencing setbacks.

Donations are down, and the group is in danger of having electricity shut off Thursday, Sept. 29.

Organizers said a power shutdown would impact their effort to help the hundreds of homeless veterans who walk through their doors with job and education opportunities, and two meals a day.

“We put our guys out on the line for community donations and things like that. The money that comes back in, we turn around and spend it back on the veterans or the organization to keep it up and running,” said Calista Anderson, president of Vets Helping Vets.

I guess Steven that posted above hasn't heard that VHV is under new ownership and comments like his, relating VHV to the old ownership said to be guilty of embezelment, is exactly why their donations have been down to the point that their electricity has been shut off.

Special thanks to Northway Mall, Burlington, and Video City. Shame that some of the local churches can't help out. Guess maybe it's not high-profile enough for them. But I'm sure this organization would be open to more constructive ideas and suggestions.

ms. anderson, wherever u are, thank you for helping "grizzly", and the "c street-ers", and keeping the food, water, coffee, and real restrooms available at the new vhv center.

i see the vhv's pretty regularly, their fundraising is just as real as churches, schools, and sports teams. the continuing-to-fund-raise-outside thru the winter is not sensible. i don't know whose idea that was. no offense, possibly an oldish Marine or Navy SEAL? i'm sure that if a person walks into the vhv bldg serious about catching up on his or her health care, or back to school or work, senior/disabled benefits, or housing, they at least give them some printed information. however a lot of the campers are hospital- and program-a-phobic. it is possible, but i have seen very, very few long-time successes.

Hardly surprising since Vets Helping Vets does exactly what they say they are trying to get homeless vets not to do, panhandling. Their fundraising by standing out using the US flag while nothing more or less than panhandling for the funds to help the real needy is rediculous. The only difference between the guys fundraising and those they are supposedly trying to help is the little uniforms. Not really much to aspire to or convert to. It's a joke.

At least somebody is trying to help, not like Mayor Sullivan's war on the poor, I can sleep in a tent and get a job if I can just find a place to shower and look decent for work.

How are they helping vets by giving them sleeping bags and tents???? I was in the military. Does it seem that all of us need sleeping bags these days. If anything...a shower..clean cloths..a shave..a haircut..a place to live..and a good attitude when getting a new job are needed more. These guys running this organization are hurting...more than helping the vets get on with a new job and their lives. They squandered the money taken in so far....Why give them any more to squander??? Vets don't need a hand out to stay in the woods....They need practical jobs and a place to live.
