ANCHORAGE – The Anchorage Police Department has made an arrest in the case of a woman who was found stabbed to death in her bathtub.

41-year-old Vernell McLemore was arraigned on first-degree murder charges Friday afternoon.

Police believe McLemore killed his neighbor; 67-year-old Judy Mulder, after a robbery attempt went bad in February.

“He being the next door neighbor went into her residence with the intent to rob her and at some point in time there was an altercation,” said Anita Shell, spokesperson for APD. “A knife was produced and he ended up slashing her throat and that's where she died.”

According to charging documents, McLemore told a girlfriend that he stabbed Mulder because she refused to give him money, but that after her death he stole her purse.
