What a winter it has been so far in Valdez. They are currently on pace to break the all time snowfall record in a season. Records have been kept by the National Weather Service in Valdez since 1972. Here is a look at some of the numbers. We’ll start things off with a look at the top 5 Decembers in Valdez in terms of snowfall.

December 2011 – 152.2’’ fell. That is more than 12 feet of snow. (New Record)

December 1991 – 137.1’’ fell

December 1994 – 124.5’’ fell

December 1989 – 123.3’’ fell

December 1988 – 110.0’’ fell

To put these monthly numbers in perspective. Here in Anchorage we only average 69.5’’ for an entire winter.

So now we will take a look at the all time snowfall record for Valdez, which they are on pace to break. The all time record year was in the winter of 1989/1990 when 560.0’’ blanketed the city. That is more than 46 feet of snow. Here is the current pace they are on compared to the witner of 89/90.

As of Jan. 5th, 2012 – 246.6’’ of snow has fallen in Valdez. That’s over 20 feet.

As of Jan. 5th, 1990 – 221.5’’ of snow had fallen on Valdez.

And guess what more snow is in store for Valdez another 2 to 3 feet is possible tonight and more snow is in store for you this weekend. A big thank you to Andrew Brown with the National Weather Service in Anchorage for digging up these numbers.
