'Unemployment Discrimination' And The JoblessOf the 14 million Americans currently unemployed, 6 million have been jobless for more than 6 months.
(CBS News) Of the 14 million Americans currently unemployed, 6 million have been jobless for more than 6 months.
CBS News correspondent Elaine Quijano reports that many job seekers say being unemployed is being held against them. Delores Barnes always goes job hunting armed with her dossier of documents, including her birth certificate. Two years ago, she was laid off from her supervisor job with New York's Children's Services. Ever since, Barnes has been looking for work to support her and her nine-year-old daughter, Savianna "I can't give up. I'm on a mission. I have a daughter, and she's like, I have to be strong for her. I have to show her that you just don't give up," Barnes says. Yet no amount of persistence can overcome the simple fact that some employers don't want to hire the unemployed. In job posting after job posting, companies require that applicants "must be currently employed." "They have that perception that they are the dead weight, therefore they want the strong people who are currently employed," says Robert Krzak, president of Gecko Hospitality. Krzak says some companies won't even consider unemployed job candidates. "If there is a candidate out there who has been out there in the job market for six months or even a year or more than a year, a lot of companies are very suspect of that, because why aren't they working?" Krzak says. "It's discriminatory and the fact that just because you don't have a job you can't compete for a job," says Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn. DeLauro is sponsering a bill aimed at stopping the practice. "These are competent people. They have lost their job through no fault of their own, Why shouldn't they have an opportunity?" DeLauro says. Barnes says the practice doesn't make sense, hiring people who have jobs when so many don't. Barnes is now training to be a computer technician, and says she'll keep pounding the pavement, even though with some companies she can't even get her foot in the door. |

If you held up a fake green card....you'd be employed immediately. Or just whisper in their ear that you are an illegal alien....Barack Obama will give you a job in a second....and a free education to boot.

I've been unemployed for 2 years as well...right now I'm doing temp work but it's not that satisfying -- you go to work and sit half the time doing nothing. I've applied for so many jobs that I've quit counting...it's always the same -- Thanks but no thanks. I've been an office worker and a good one for 20 plus years but HA where does my experience get me -- NO WHERE!!! It's really demeaning, frustrating and depressing. I'm tired of being told no all the time -- what are we suppose to do to survive??? Social Security states it is not to be relied on for a living (ha-you can hardly exist on it) but you can't force someone to give you a job. I used to want another job for insurance purposes now I've taken it down to doing a job so I can pay my bills and buy groceries. Wah, wah, wah -- I know no one wants to hear about this but until you've been in this situation you can't imagine what it is like.

Response to Steven, It's sad when your own country has the mantra "Help those from the OUTSIDE of the nation of America and leave those inside to fend for themselves." It's all well and everything to help someone, but if we ourselves CAN'T help ourselves than why are we trying to help someone else? Don't we all hear when we are younger "look out for number one?" Oh wait...I guess those in congress and the govt DON'T HAVE to worry about that because oh yeah they HAVE resources and MONEY OUR MONEY at their ever disposal whenever it's "needed." However when it comes to the hand that feeds them getting there's to sustain and survive what happens? Oh were sorry but we don't have enough health care resources for you no debt relief for you NOTHING for those that PAID us to do RIGHT with our money...sometimes it just doesn't PAY lol to be American anymore..Go ahead forefathers you can roll over in your grave now! Sad sad world we live in nowadays!

gee money, the republican party used to be conservative, unfortuanately all the reaching across the isles done by them means the are often RINOS. True conservative beliefs are what made this country, and what saved it when Ronnie came to the white house, and what is being ignored by the lamestream left who will distroy this country.
