Since 2008 the number of complaints the university has received from record and movie companies about illegal downloads has doubled to more than 800 a year in 2010, and this year’s figures are on track to top that. University staff says they have no choice now but to cut the internet speeds to the dorm rooms – where they claim most of the illegal downloading is taking place.

Internet speed in dorms will be reduced to 2 megabits per second. University staff says this speed will not impact students ability to do their class work and leisure activities like streaming video and some online gaming. But it’s hoped the slower speed will stop the illegal downloads.

Some UAA students who live in dorms think the decision is unfair. Students are worried activities they do online for fun will now be impossible.

But UAA has made its decision and staff say the reduced speeds and restrictions to certain file sharing sites will be in place within the next couple of weeks, throttling back the internet speeds of the many to stop the few.
