After sifting through more than 150 applications, the Anchorage School Board named its two finalists for the superintendent position.

Steve Atwater is the current superintendent of the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District in Soldotna.

Jim Browder is the former superintendent of Lee County School District in Fort Myers, Floriday.

Both candidates will come for a three-day visit in January to meet with students and staff and learn more about the community.

The school board says it’s looking for a candidate who will be able to commit to the job for the long haul.

“We want someone who’s going to stick around,” said Gretchen Guess, president of the school board. “The board is not interested in a one or two year candidate. It’s not good for the district, it’s not good for the community and we need to move forward.”

The board hopes to name the finalist at the end of January.

The new superintendent will lead the first school board meeting July 1.
