Headline: Troopers Involved In Fatal Fourth Of July Shooting Identified

The two Alaska state troopers who shot and killed a 19-year-old Palmer man during Monday’s early morning standoff were identified as Timothy Cronin of the Palmer post, who’s been a trooper since February of 2008, and Matthew Determan of the Mat-Su West Post, who’s been a trooper since January of 2010.

According to the Department of Public Safety, three other troopers and three Wasilla police officers were also at Winding Brook Loop in Palmer at 12:45 a.m. Monday. Troopers were dispatched there after receiving calls that Adrian Spindler was suicidal.

Troopers said Spindler was walking in and out of the home with a weapon. They said attempts to talk to him were unsuccessful. Two women who were in the home with him at the time were removed safely.

About an hour later, Troopers said, Spindler walked out onto the porch and threatened officers with a gun. Troopers said that’s when Cronin and Determan opened fire.

Medics declared Spindler dead at the scene.

The Alaska Bureau of Investigation is still looking into the shooting. The Department of Law’s Office of Special Prosecutions and Appeals (OSPA) will then review ABI’s findings. DPS will also review the case to determine if the troopers’ actions were appropriate under the circumstances, in accordance with department policy and whether they used every option to try to avoid using deadly force and prevent the final outcome, said a DPS spokesperson.

Maybe these officers have to shoot people more often because you Alaskan drunks are so useless to try to police. Seriously, someone comes at me with a gun I am going to shoot them. And to the illiterate on here defending his piece of garbage cousin, maybe if you people spent as much time getting him help as you do complaining, he would be alive today. Cops are there to keep me safe from these kinds of losers, and I am glad he is dead rather than threatening people with a gun. Why are you people such losers out there?

Trooper Timothy Cronnin; hired in 2008 of the Alaska State Troopers. Killed a subject in 2009, now killing a subject in 2011. Already taking TWO lives, in a 3 year career span. I'm sorry that's an unfortunate RECORD.

My dad, who was a territorial police officer before statehood and one of the first state troopers would have asked what they did to talk him down. They were behind cars if they followed proper procedure, protected. He would have wanted to know if they even tried to talk to him as he stepped out with that weapon. He had many simular instances in his career and never had to kill one person, he would have seen this kid as a human being in crisis first, but I wasn't there, nor were any of you except the women in the house and the troopers who responded so all we have to go on is what they say. I would like to know what they tried to do before pulling the trigger though.

Ask for help, but not w/a gun said on Thursday, Jul 14 at 3:03 AM

Those officers have families to go home to at the end of the shift. And if someone unstable is pointing a gun at you, are you certain that you can talk them down? Wanna take a chance?? If he started firing & hit a neighbors child, you would be yelling that AST didn't do their job! And who cares which agency responded, it depends on who is available to assist. Maybe there was another emergency in Palmer. You don't know what else is going on in the Valley. What a dumb question! Himself, friends & family should have taken action before it got to this point. Sad ending, but nobodies fault ultimately, but his own. And who cares how long the officers have been w/AST?! Maybe they have prior experience at another agency?? Again, you have no clue, huh? I am sorry for the family to have to go thru this......

Why were the least experience officers the first and only to fire? Were they trigger happy? I have not heard a bullet count yet. Perhaps we should ask who was lead officer at the scene as well? The city, the state, the "law enforcement" community and all to often the courts will have us believe there are only two types of officers, the absolute perfect and unquestionable and those that commit crimes like sexual abuse, abuse of authority for drugs and sex, child pornography, etc. and within the Anchorage police dept. this is almost an annual occurrence. Does anyone actually believe that? That within the police department there is only the squeaky clean and the absolute filth? If any one questions a cop's actions the blue curtain goes up around him; that is until the crimes are so atrocious that they can't hide them any longer. Hiding or condoning bad behavior with children is called bad parenting. In AA it is called enabling.

Very typical of families of criminals to defend each other. He didn't just have mental problems, he had homicidal problems. And one you try to kill someone then they deserve to die. It was self-defense plain and simple.

You know, I*LOVE*YOU*COUSIN, before you you blame AST, why don't you look at what YOU could have done to avert this tragedy!! YOU had ample time to get your beloved cousin help and YOU FAILED! How about quit blaming the AST for your failure. Your whole family failed. I feel really bad that your cousin died, especially since he was about to be a Dad, but if things were really so bad, why didn't he get help for himself, if being a Dad was so important to him. I have fought depression for years, and will continue to do so until I am a ripe old age because I got help when things were bad, so MY kids didn't grow up without me!!! My condolences to you and yours, but quit the blame game here buddy!!!

When someone is in a mental state, why not aim to shoot them in the arm, leg, or somewhere that is not fatal. There were enough cops there who could have took him down. Tear gas was another option. What are you relaying to the public; that it's okay to shoot to kill even when the perpetrator has mental issues. Shame , shame, shame on the Alaskan Police Dept. Throw your badges away, you are not law officers, you are murderers.

Good Job Troopers, I feel sorry for the family of that young man but don't be harsh with those who's job it is to protect us until you are looking down a barrel of a gun and wondering is he going to shoot you and then respond and make a deciion in 2 to 3 seconds that will have an affect on you the rest of your life. Its easy to Hate try understanding what there job really is and what hey do each and every day. If you think they want to go around and shoot folks at will you really need to open your eyes. God Bless you Troopers, there are citizens out here who love what you do and appreciate your selfless service to our community and our state

When was the last time one of you tried to rationalize with someone pointing a loaded gun at you? I feel bad for all involved, the troopers where doing their job and should not take the chance of being killed if they feel threatened. I'm sure if any of you would like to "Talk Down" someone armed and mental they'd love to hear from you and send you in first to see if the person is serious.... please call and leave your # at the dispatch desk.

What I find interesting is that there were 8 LE officers present and only two fired...wait a minute, the two who were the newbies, the people just out of training, did all the shooting?!?!?!?! Seems to me someone was quick on the trigger, or is that someones? This kinda' garbage needs to stop! This guy had serious mental issues and LE decided they did not want to deal with it in a manner that would take a little bit of time, i.e., getting control of the person and getting them to mental health. This is the third time in as many years...it has to STOP!

Notice how both of these troopers were new on the job. They were trigger happy and looking for trouble. But as usual the IA investigation will clear them of any wrongdoing.
