Trooper Testifies In Bonnie Craig Murder Trial About Crime SceneInvestigator found bloody leaf at McHugh Creek. At 5:45 a.m., on Sept. 28, 1994, Eric Behr was taking his usual route to work-typically a solitary commute, he says until he spotted “a young girl,” Behr said. “She was walking north on Lake Otis and she was dressed for winter,” he said of Bonnie Craig.
“Was there anything about this woman walking along that caused you to pay special attention to her?” assistant district attorney Jenna Gruenstein asked Behr.
“Just the vulnerability at that hour,” said Behr, one of the last people to see 18-year-old Craig alive.
Hours later, about 2 p.m., Troopers got a call.
“There was a dead body floating in (McHugh) creek there at the base of a cliff near a small waterfall,” said Robert Mark Baty, who’s now the Cordova police chief, but worked in 1994 with the Troopers' criminal investigations bureau.
“As I was traveling up the trail, I was looking for any type of evidence,” said Baty, who took video of the crime scene. “I was able to observe a single drop of blood on a leaf on the trail and then about five or six feet away from that on the ledge itself what appeared to be slide marks on the edge of the cliff, and some bent vegetation.”
But accused killer Kenneth Dion's defense attorney pointed out there's no evidence at the scene that Craig had been raped and bludgeoned there.
“I have no idea where she was beaten,” Baty said.
“Understood, but my question is: you have no idea, no evidence she was beaten in a vehicle,” said Andrew Lambert, Dion’s attorney.
“Again, I say, I have no idea where she was beaten,” Baty said.
“And if someone had beaten her and driven her to McHugh Creek they'd have to park down here and walk and carry her up if she's dead, right?” Lambert said.
“That would call for stipulation on my part,” Baty said. “She could easily have walked there at someone's direction. She could have walked there with her head bleeding profusely. I don't know where any of this occurred.”
