Sign up for Alaska's Airlines Club 49 program. It's free and members get two free bags, plus email alerts and web specials.
 
Get the right credit card. Scott McMurren says he likes Bank of America's Alaska Airlines mileage card, and that other people carry American Express for the bonuses on Delta Air Lines. McMurren also says United Airlines has a deal with Citibank. He recommends to pick one or two cards and start raking in the bonus miles. 
 
Use the technology like Facebook and Twitter. Scott McMurren says airlines track social media much better than its old, tired phone lines. The airlines also send mini-alerts, which are made for folks on the go.
