Tuesday was Alaska Day and Alaska Airlines capitalized on the occasion announcing a new program for Alaska residents called Club 49; but is the program really a deal?

Travel guru Scott McMurren of Alaska TravelGram breaks down Club 49 along with the Pen Air companion sale launched over the weekend.

Pen Air Deal

In response to poor service and a string of flight cancellations over the past several weeks, Pen Air released an apology and announced it is releasing a “back on course” deal.

Company CEO Danny Seybert said Pen Air is “owning up publicly" for its mistake.

Peninsula Airways, more commonly known simply as Pen Air, is offering a $49 companion fare between Anchorage and the following destinations (plus applicable fares for the first traveler):

  • Aniak – starting at $320 roundtrip
  • Dillingham –starting at $452 roundtrip (blackout dates: ANC-DLG June 1-30, 2012, DLG-ANC July 1-31, 2012)
  • St. Paul Island – starting at $962 roundtrip
  • St. George Island – starting at $962 roundtrip

Alaska Airlines’ Club 49

In other travel news, Alaska Airlines unveiled its Club 49 program exclusively for Alaska residents, but will the offer live up to the hype?

Enrollment in the program includes:

  • Two one-way “travel now” certificates valid for a 30 percent off discount on travel to, from or within Alaska, providing travel is booked within four days of departure
  • Receipt of weekly emails for fare sales

Current Alaska Airlines deals include:

  • Anchorage-Seattle - $179 each way, plus tax
  • Anchorage-Portland - $189 each way, plus tax
  • Anchorage-Bethel - $99 each way, plus tax

I have never seen such a shame of a business, poor customer service, and a "rape" of fees then PEN AIR. They are the worst flight organization I have ever, EVER had to deal with. We here in Dutch Harbor are held captive by Pen Air, its poor customer service, and high fees because no one else is willing or able to come out here. No competition mean less customer service, higher prices, and unsatisfied customers. Danny Seybert, what are you not taking a better look on what is happening out here in Dutch Harbor. In fact, why are there no deals in the "Back On Course" deals to include Dutch Harbor to Anchorage. God, you need to do something.
