Trapper Creek residents are in the clear, after 550 pounds of explosives were discovered Friday night. About 50 homes were evacuated after a property owner of an old abandoned station wagon called Alaska State Troopers about old explosives he found.

According to Alaska State Troopers the explosives, ammonium nitrate and nitro glycerin, were 15 to 20 years old. That’s when the Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson’s bomb disposal team got involved. They decided the safest way to avoid a potential deadly disaster was to detonate the explosives.

“We made sure that we were doing this deliberately, that safety procedures were taken into affect and that we could do this all safely, because this is a large amount of dynamite that they we’re going to detonate,” said Beth Ipsen a spokesperson for the Alaska State Troopers.

Residents were evacuated to the Trapper Creek Elementary School, until the bomb squad detonated the explosives at 2:00 a.m. Saturday morning. Troopers say with the exception of a few broken windows from the blast, no one was hurt. However, it is still an ongoing investigation, which is why state troopers will not release pictures of the scene.
