Track Season is On Despite Near-Record Snowfall

Athletes train at Dome instead of outside

ANCHORAGE - It doesn't matter if there's still snow or ice on the ground, because if you're a high school track athlete in Anchorage you're learning to work around it.

Track season officially kicked off three weeks ago, but with the city close to record-breaking snowfall there's not a lot of places outside to train. So in between running in hallways and stairs, teams are taking turns at the Anchorage Dome to hone their skills and get faster.

"This allows us to practice at a higher intensity and it more closely simulates race conditions and you don't have to worry as much about injuries as you would on a hard tile floor," said Nathaniel Grabman, who is East High's boys’ track coach.

The East tracksters join seven other schools Friday at the dome in a meet called the Eight by Eight.
