It happened two days after their mother was shot in the same East Anchorage neighborhood. Biologists said the 6-month-old cubs were too young to survive on their own. Fish and Game biologist Jessy Coltrane said the shootings illustrate an ongoing problem in Anchorage – people who leave their garbage out where bears can get it. “I wish we had a place to put them,” said Coltrane. “But we have zero places where we can place black bears. This is the harsh reality; these bears are dead because of negligent trash practices.” Coltrane said people in the Baxter Bog area have been asked, warned and even threatened with fines to try and get them to keep their trash inside. In most cases she said, it’s not a case of garbage spilling over on to the street, simply that the trashcans are left outdoors or put by the curb the night before pick-up. “It’s not like they are leaving trash out in their front yard, but from a bear’s perspective it’s easily accessible.” Police said people may not realize that putting your trash out early is actually against the law. “Its illegal to put your trash out the night before, you have to put it out on the day of,” said Sergent Aaron Whitt. “And yes, there have been citations issued for that offense.” Homeowners could face a fine of $300, but Coltrane said that’s nothing compared to what could happen to the bear – which she calls the “ugly side” of leaving garbage out. 10 bears have been shot in Anchorage this summer and most of those were getting into garbage. |

this is so sad, all the way around. when stated "zero places for them to be sent"......what is the reason that at least some of them couldn't be taken to the Alaska Conservation Center--not so far away--in Portage?

I have been on the eastside 48 years. I love that I was tought that WE took the land from the wildlife. I hate those that caused these deaths due to their trash being out. I wish upon them the death the bears suffered.

I really hope they processed the meat and gave it to a shelter or needy family.. Wish we could harvest more than 3 bears a years, finest meat Alaska has to offer!!

Sad all way round! Should have darted family and relocated on west side Cook Inlet. Shame on you Channel 11 for showing the bloody, dead cubs being put into bags.... over and over and over!! Not in good taste.... didn't give warning of scenes not suitable for children or others.

I thought it was Very unnecessary to show them putting the dead cubs in garbage bags! very distasteful! I realize they didn't have a choice in putting them down. But you had a choice to show that. It was inappropriate and disgusting! What about the kids that might of seen that??????? Was it that news worthy????????
