Third Fast Food Restaurant Robbed This Year

Police have not connected the rash of robberies

ANCHORAGE - A dozen Anchorage police officers and canine units swarmed the area near Northway Mall at Burger King. They were looking for a suspect who witnesses say was a lone gunman who came in the restaurant and demanded money. He then left the scene on foot.

He hasn't been found yet, and this case looks a lot like several others that have happened in Anchorage since the New Year.

On January, a Southside Subway was robbed.

Just two days later, an armed man walked into a downtown Pizza Hut and demanded money. He wasn't caught, even though the restaurant he robbed was right across the street from the F.B.I. building.

Less than a week later, an Extended Stay Hotel was robbed.

In each case, witnesses describe the person with a gun as a Latino, Hispanic or possibly Pacific Islander man. They say he's between 5'6'' and 5'10''. All suspects are said to be wearing dark clothing.

Alaska Police Department spokesperson Anita Shell said that description is very general. "A lot of people wear dark colored clothes, so that doesn't differentiate people from one another."

Robbery is a common crime in Anchorage; Shell said one are two are reported every day. She said these incidents just happen to get more attention. "We hear about these ones because there are witnesses. There are a lot people. It's a public place."

Until officers have a reason to connect them, they're investigating each robbery as a seperate crime with seperate suspects.

News story of the year? No Edward R. Murrow award this time. What day? What time? Anything taken? How many witnesses? Did the police spokesperson really say "these ones"? "They were looking for a suspect who witnesses say a lone gunman came in" - English 101 anyone?
