The winter is here, along with the cold dark days. However, for most Alaskans that's not going to stop us from trying something new.
How about winter scuba diving?
I decided to venture out to meet scuba instructor Kelly Cowell of Zero Gravity Scuba to get the scoop on winter diving in Alaska. I had one slight setback though… Do you have to know how to swim?
Yes, it is definitely preferred, but I wasn't going to let this set back an adrenaline junkie like myself. "People, when they're looking outside, they’re thinking you’ve got to be crazy to go diving in Alaska during the winter time." said Kelly Cowell.
Cowell believes winter scuba diving in Alaska is the most extreme sport out there, while some think it's impossible. However, having the proper gear such as a drysuit will keep you warm and make you feel secure about being in sub-temperature water.
Another big question is, will you run out of air?
Zero Gravity Scuba teaches their students to always have a backup plan: from learning to breathe off an alternate air source, to knowing your consumption rate and anxiety levels. Kelly tells us it's really just mental, and once you get over that fear anything is possible.
Winter scuba will make you feel like the impossible is possible this winter season. Zero Gravity Scuba's next dive will be this weekend in Whittier. If you would like to join the fun their next class is at the end of February.
