A group of teens at the Boys & Girls Club of Mountain View are looking to become the next hip-hop stars with help from the club’s recording studio.

It was two years ago when Denaris Patterson, 19, Jahkeel Joseph, 18, and Greg Williams, 16, met at the Boys & Girls Club and formed Team Legit, a hip-hop and R&B group.

“It kept me out of trouble,” said Greg Williams, one of the band members. “I would come here and enjoy myself while having fun.”

Since the group met, they’ve recorded more than thirty songs, and have been performing at events around town. They even recorded a theme song for the Boys & Girls clubs.

It’s only been a few years since the club installed a studio courtesy of grant money and donated music equipment. Frank Stiner, an employee at the club who also runs the program, said the studio has provided an outlet for teens to get their emotions out, while at the same time providing a positive environment for kids.

“That is what Team Legit is doing—doing the hard work and the dedication and refining their music,” said Stiner. “Couldn’t be prouder of them.”

But there’s a catch with their music—it doesn’t use profanity and is geared toward kids.

“They make it seem as though they have to (curse) by rhyming, by making their cursing words rhyme,” said Jahkeel Joseph, another band member. “You don’t really need to do that at all.”

The group hopes to inspire younger kids to have a dream and work toward it.

Well I hope they do an awesome job and I think it's great they want to inspire younger children's dreams and encourage them to work towards them, wish we had kids wanting to do this when I was younger!! I have two beautiful daughters and I hope they will listen to them as well!!!
