Tax Deadline Approaches; One Week Left

If you have been pushing off filing your taxes, you have just about one week left to take care of business.
This year, taxes are due April 18, three days later than last year.
The IRS reports a substantial up tick in e-Filing, filing taxes online, this year but surveys indicate that about a quarter of Americans still wait until the last minute.
If you need more time, you can file for an extension but keep in mind that you will still have to pay 90 percent of your estimated taxes by the deadline in order to avoid penalties.
“If you don’t pay on time, you're going to be hit with both interest and penalties,” said Senior IRS Tax Consultant Kris Ashley. “Be sure you file on time. The penalty for filing late is 10 times as big as it is for failing to pay on time.”

If you dread filing your taxes for fear of having to pay more and can’t afford it, Ashley offers the following advice: “Get your tax return in and then worry about how to pay it.”
