Supporters of Proposition 5 Are "Embarrassed" the Anti-Discrimination Bill Didn't Pass

Failure of Proposition 5 pleases some and surprises others

ANCHORAGE -The only proposition that failed in Tuesday’s election was Proposition 5, which would have extended the city’s anti-discrimination protections to gays, lesbians and transgender members of the community.

The fact that the initiative didn’t pass took many by surprise.

Just ten days before the election a poll by Dittman Research put the proposition passing by a narrow margin, but by the time the polls closed Tuesday 58 percent of voters had voted no on Proposition 5.

“We are definitely disappointed,“ said Trevor Storrs, spokesman for One Anchorage, the group formed to promote the proposition. Storrs said they felt positive about the diverse support the measure received.

But in the final days it was the opposition, led by conservative church groups, which may have done a better job of getting the vote out.

Sarah Crumbly said she voted against the measure because her pastor asked her to.

“I am a Christian so I believe that a man is supposed to be with a woman,” said Crumbly. “If everybody believed that we wouldn’t have an issue, so I am glad it didn’t pass.”

Others see Tuesday’s results differently.

“I’m embarrassed it didn’t pass”, said Joey Blockhouse. “The groups who are against it, basically they made a choice to be in a religion and they are saying these people made a choice. Everybody I know who’s gay didn’t make a choice, they just knew they were.”

Backers of Proposition 5 said they’ll continue to fight for what they see as an issue of equality, although they’re not sure what their next step will be.

They are NOT "mutually exclusive". Educate yourself and then speak. You listen to minnery too much. You and those like you are THE problem in this city!!

The big reason it failed was linking it with the transgender movement which is primarily transvestites. Just remember transsexual and transgender are mutually exclusive and is an attempt to hide the fact they are promoting transvestite rights.

Steve S, that's exactly what part of the problem was. Which is exactly why Mr Storrs and others should have taken this under consideration and made the appropriate changes before it was presented for a vote. When the time comes it will be ERC and prob some judge that make decisions based on exactly how it was written, not based on the opinion of the Anti or Pro Prop 5 folks.

Wanna know how STUPID Alaskans, especially Anchorage Alaskans are? They elected a Right Wing "religious" hypocrite on the basis of her Republicanism and her "religiosity", just as Republicans all across the nation have done ever since the Ralph Reeds of the world ordered them to. You are about as independent and unique, free-thinking and intelligent, as the 600-plus morons who died with Jim Jones, and those Mormons, who have 20 wives and sent the most money from everywhere to California to meddle because their talking gecko told them to, and the Catholics are second, the priests rape boys religion, the girls and women get pregnant by priests religion. You morons only point to your choice of gods as your excuse to continue to discriminate when you are confronted with why? and can't come up with any real reasons for it. "God" is always the final excuse. It's been proven all the way to the Supreme Courts of dozens of states. No evidence has ever been produced that gays harm "the state".

No Steve, I think you are the one naive or just plain lying. Where does "straight" fit into LGBT? Bullying? prop 5 is trying to force people with a different view into agreeing with your views. And what would you know about Christianity Steve? I do know that rebuke and chastening is done out of love, whether it hurts or not. Take a little time to do some studying in the word before you criticize different religions. And do some research about this ridiculous prop 5 while your at it.

It amazes me that so many against prop 5 didnt even know what the law was or really said... I dont know about you but sexual orientation applies to any and every body. As far as being embarrased the only embarrased individuals should be those that ran the no on 5 campaign... What a brutal bullying non-christian campaign that was. Lies and discrimination their only tactic now thats embarrasing to any god fearing person.

I find it amazing how little knowledge of the law so many against prop 5 had/have. sexual orientation protects everyone including those not gay or transgendered. And as far as tolerance and no sayers claim that yes sayers were intolerant as they were getting saluted with the middle finger when out sign waving they were giving you the bird they were giving the extremely negative campaign that was ran against prop 5. There were lies, tons of them by the leader of no on 5. He lied to you he lied to the public to induce fear and force you to think and hate as such.

I think religous groups need to keep there business to themselves. Not everyone believes in GOD... Some believe in many gods.. And if said "GOD" does exist what do you think he would say.. "Hate my creations!" It is OK to not agree with homosexuality.. However they still they need to be protected under the law like everyone else. Many minority groups have had to fight for the same thing. It takes time. And in time this to shall pass. Just be patient and don't let misguided people do all the talking. Expecially if they can't walk a mile in your shoes. I say to people who appose Prop 5 should consider giving away there rights as well. After all Anchorage is talerant right???

Equality under the law is just that and it doesn't take your sexual preferences in to account. No one should be surprised at the defeat of this misguided proposition.

To Jen... It's amazing how much people change as they mature. What I see wrong with your logic is as your high school friends get old enough to vote, those adults also age and mature. Time seems to add wisdom to age. Us old people used to be young and think with our emnotion too. Now we use our life experience and lessons to lead us. At least most of us do. Some are still doing drugs and acting like they're teenagers. But not many thankfully.

Isn't it messed up when they act that way this and all the other news agencies will not report on the topic, but, it would be an outcry and "bigot this" and "bigot that" if we did the same to them. It's about time we get a real news reporter here in Anchorage.

I waved a sign for Vote No On 5. The LGBT community says they want tolerance, but we got many cursings, "F" finger waved and yelled at by many passing cars. Where's YOUR tolerance! or is it a one way street; only we have to be tolerant of YOU! We were expressing our American right, Just as the "Vote yes" group did. It wasnt equal rights, it was about special rights; you wanted me to give up my rights for you to have more rights. Sorry, we choose whats right according to God.

The people exercised “their right” to vote and the people said "NO" to special treatment of sexual orientation, which is your business. All U.S. citizens have equal rights; no special rights to a particular sexual orientation? The majority said “NO”

I am sorry, but do not mock religion as the reason why this bill hasn't passed. Religion is suppose to be a faith where one can believe and feel that they have some meaning in their lives and able to love others rather than just judging those and those without religion tend to use that as en excuse to bewildered themselves into doing so many wrong things without self control for their own stupidity.

Nearly 60% voted No and all you people that support prop 5 keep the spotlight on "religious folks" that are against this. FYI Alaska is one of the least religious states in the union. We rank even less than California.

What a way to make a 1 Anchorage. I am not for prop 5 and know and work with gays, I have never seen them being treated different at least in a negative way and in my own observation they get treated better than most of the rest of the workers. This prop would give an unfair advantage to less qualified employees being hired for simply being gay and while where at it what about a prop for Straight Anti-discrimination, lets protect everyone.

I'm sorry...I just have to shake my head at this clearly one sided, one minded reporting on the reason for Prop 5 not passing! I'm sick of hearing that the only reason for it not passing is because of 'religious' people (who clearly are not entitled to their beliefs as those individuals who do support Prop 5 are) and their supposed 'narrow mindedness' at not wanting to pass a very poorly written proposition. And Jen, pushing it back to a vote again, and again, and again...is well, a waste of time! It wasn't a 'marginal' loss. Over 60% of Anchorage (of which only 4% claim to be religiously affiliated, interestingly enough)voted it down. So I would venture to say that there must have been one or two 'non-religious' people who voted NO on this. Prop 5 supporters...QUIT stomping your foot and using unfounded statements as an excuse to whine already!!

I am/was For Prop 5 but I realized that the chances of this passing the first time was minimal. What needs to happen next is it needs to go back to vote again, and again, and again. The more younger voters that go the better chance we have to pass this. Out of my siblings and their friends high-school but not voting age, I asked ALL of them said they would vote FOR prop 5. Out of all of the Adults 10 years or more older then me only about 25% said they would vote for prop 5.

Maybe should have paid closer attention to the quality of the ordinance, instead of how much the other side made, or how they should pull their ad cuz they're picking on you. You were working with a legal directive, not some proclamation...
