Member of Parliament from newly formed South Sudan comes to town

It has been nearly five months since the people of South Sudan formed their own country, after decades of civil war with the North – a war that left millions dead. It was a milestone that affected thousands of Sudanese who call Alaska home.

For several months, the Sudanese community of Anchorage has been wondering how the country will move forward, and Friday they got an answer.

This week, Honorable Gatluak Riek Jack, a member of the South Sudan Parliament, made a special trip to Alaska to visit with dozens of Sudanese families across the community.

One of the issues the country faces is a lack of infrastructure, not to mention a painful poverty level. A United Nations 2010 Human Development Report ranks Sudan as one of the ten most poverty-stricken countries in the world, which Southern Sudanese government officials say they’re working to tackle.

But most importantly, South Sudan leaders say it will take effort from every Sudanese to move the newly emerging country forward.

Honorable Reik Jack also told us the two countries, North and South Sudan, have not had a good relationship, but the governments are trying to work together.
