ANCHORAGE - Roughly 18,000 lunches are served each day to Anchorage School District students. That's why students and staff are stepping back from indulging on fruit leather, and hoping for changes to make locally grown produce available. Students at Polaris K-12 school sampled local vegetables prepared by culinary students from East High School on Tuesday. After tasting a variety of Alaska-grown veggies, students voted on what they enjoyed the most. The Anchorage School District dietitian also participated in the taste test, and will use the results to improve lunch menu options.

Samuel Erickson, one of the organizers, said, "It's like something we can teach, something we can learn about... and I think the schools are a great place to start. School lunches is a great place to teach our kids that attend public schools how to eat well, how to be mindful of what we put in our bodies."

The students and teachers all agrees it's important to encourage better eating habits at an early age.
