ANCHORAGE - At East High School Saturday, hundreds of students from across the state put their heads together for the 57th annual Alaska Science and Engineering Fair.

For most students, the fair is an opportunity to showcase projects they've been working on for weeks.

For three ambitious high-schoolers, it's a door to the International Science and Engineering Fair and millions of dollars in scholarships.

But it's not just about scholarships and prizes. Fair organizers say many of the projects have strong ties to students' lives.

“Some of them are actually doing projects related to our town, or their towns. So, it's really nice to see them going out and asking questions that are important to them, that are relative,” said Jana Lage, an organizer of the fair.

The fair is an Intel Engineering and Science Fair, which aims to propel students from around the world into science and engineering careers.
